YouGov Poll Predicts Close Race.

June 9, 2004 - Staff

A YouGov poll in today’s Evening Standard puts Steve Norris only 2 points behind the current Mayor, Ken Livingstone.

Mr Norris is predicted to win 49% of the vote with Livingstone on 51%. However the LibDems maintain their man could win. Chris Rennard, LibDem campaign chief today said "this internet survey shows that if Simon can get into second place he remains the only candidate who can beat Ken Livingstone."

After the poll was published Steve Norris appealed to Londoners for their support saying "There is only one way to beat Livingstone and Labour – that is to vote Norris for a safer London. The poll shows it’s neck-and-neck but we are taking nothing for granted."

Mayor Livingstone told spoke of the "disaster" of waking up on Friday and finding "they have a Tory Mayor, when they would never have allowed it to happen if they had thought it possible."

Polls open at 7am on Thursday 10th June
