Warning over Council Tax ‘reassessment’ scam

March 23, 2010 - Martin Hoscik@MayorWatch

Residents in Merton are being warned against a scam operating in the borough in which householders are asked to pay for a council tax ‘reassessment’ on the promise of a refund.

Officials say the bogus callers sometimes claim to be from a group called the Consumers Advice Bureau and ask householders to provide their personal information.

Merton Council Deputy Leader and cabinet member for change management and performance, Councillor Samantha George said: “We always work to put the needs of our residents first so we want to make sure that they are not tricked into giving out their personal information. Council officers are on hand to discuss individual council tax queries as part of a free service. If anyone receives one of these calls or a call of a similar nature, we ask them to report this to the police on the non-emergency number of 0300 123 1212.”

Residents of any borough with concerns about their council tax band can contact the official local valuation office via www.voa.gov.uk
