Wandsworth launches black youth employment service

January 6, 2009 - Martin Hoscik@martinhoscik

Wandsworth Council is launching an employment support service to offer one-to-one skills coaching and job access to young black men in the borough.

The scheme, which will be operated by recruitment experts Talent in partnership with the council, starts in April 2009 with the aim of helping 105 candidates into work over a two year period.

The council says unemployment levels among young black males of Caribbean heritage are higher than any other ethnic group.

Candidates will be given personalised training from experienced recruitment experts on CV building, interview technique, communication skills and dealing with pressure in the workplace.

To increase access to the the service, outreach workers will be based on estates and in community premises.

Cllr James Cousins, council spokesman for regeneration and employment explains the initiative is part of the council’s ‘best buy’ campaign to help residents and businesses through the economic downturn.

“This scheme brings vital support to the doorsteps of those who need it most. With new skills and better access to the jobs market, more unemployed young black men can reach their potential in the workplace.

“With recession looming it is vital that we keep investing in our workforce to equip them for the difficult times ahead. This scheme is working alongside a raft of new measures helping residents and business cope with the credit crunch.”

Full details of the scheme will be published nearer the launch date.
