Transport for London has welcomed a £5m grant from the UK Government to fund 90 new hybrid buses.

Hybrid buses are powered by a mix of diesel and an electric motor and are cleaner and more fuel-efficient than standard diesel buses.

The grant has been given as part of the Department for Transport’s (DfT) Green Bus Fund which supports the deployment of environmentally friendly vehicles.

TfL has already been allocated four earlier grants from the fund of 5m in 2009, £8m in 2010 and £5m in both 2011 and 2012.

As well as the 90 hybrid buses, TfL will use £360,000 of the grant to purchase four electric single deck buses which will be trialled “to establish whether the technology can undertake the rigours of operating in the capital.”

Welcoming the grant, TfL’s Mike Weston said: “The capital is leading the way on the introduction and operation of green buses and this has been recognised again this year with further funding from the Green Bus Fund.

“We will continue to increase our hybrid bus fleet and will seek, where possible, to trial exciting developments in zero emission electric technology.”

TfL says none of the grant will be used to fund the Mayor’s New Bus for London hybrid buses.
