TfL-backed grant scheme awards £190,000 to local cycle schemes

December 2, 2016 - Martin Hoscik@MayorWatch

Local cycling groups across London have been awarded a total of £190,000 in grants by Transport for London. The cash will support 46 community projects aimed at encouraging new and infrequent cyclists onto the capital’s roads.

The cash has been provided by Cycling Grants London, a TfL funded scheme which is managed by environmental regeneration charity Groundwork London and has supported 400 community based cycling initiatives since 2003.

Projects funded in the latest round include cycle maintenance sessions for children in Lambeth, cycle confidence sessions in Newham & Tower Hamlets and a ‘try before you buy’ initiative in Barking & Dagenham.

Ben Plowden, TfL’s Director of Surface Strategy and Planning, said: “Cycling leads to a healthier lifestyle, a cleaner environment and is a great way to get around the city.

“We want more people across London to discover the benefits of cycling, and we hope that through this funding we can reach people who haven’t considered getting on a bike before and offer them support to get started.”

Lindy Kelly, Executive Director of Groundwork London, added: “Cycling is a great way to get around – whether that’s to the shops, to school or work, or just for pleasure.

“Groundwork London is thrilled to be able to support to 30 new community cycling projects across the Capital this year, as well as continuing to work closely with those who are already benefitting from the Cycling Grants London scheme.”
