Simon Hughes, Lib Dem Mayoral Candidate

October 17, 2003 - Staff

Simon Hughes is on of Londons’ best known MPs. He has represented the same inner city constituency of Southwark and Bermondsey for 20 years. This is widely accepted as London’s strongest Liberal Democrat bastion against Labour.

A former candidate for the Greater London Council Hughes has spoken for his party on a range of issues including: Environment, London, Health and
Home Affairs.

In 1999 he stood for the Leadership of Lib Dem party giving up the chance to stand in the 2000 Mayoral election. Finishing second he was rewarded for a strong campaign with the Home Affairs brief.

He is seen as an energetic campaigner with strong community ties. His ability to turn a Labour safe seat into a personal stronghold could serve him well in the mayoral election.
