Hughes Claims Cameron Reforms ‘Are Failing’

August 8, 2006 - Staff

Liberal Democrat Party President and former Mayoral hopeful Simon Hughes has claimed that David Cameron’s reforms of the Conservative party are ‘”ailing”.

Mr Hughes, who came third in the 2004 elections, said the Conservative Party’s decision to extend the deadline for London mayoral candidates showed that “reforming the Tory party is clearly proving more difficult than David Cameron imagined”.

Hughes claimed that Mr Cameron’s “party reforms are failing one after another. The much-heralded ‘A-list’ was ignored in Bromley and is looking less and less likely to succeed.”

“Now the clever idea to hold a London mayoral primary election has bitten the dust.”

Earlier this month Hughes appeared to rule out a second attempt to become Mayor when he said the Liberal Democrats would be casting “the net far and wide in our search for a candidate to represent our diverse capital” and promised that “people from ethnic minority communities, women and non-politicos will be at the forefront of our selection process.”
