Nine new fire stations for capital

fire1Nine new fire stations are to be built in London under a £57million PFI contract was announced by Government Ministers.

The new stations will replace existing facilities Dagenham, Dockhead, Leytonstone, Mitcham, Old Kent Road, Orpington, Plaistow, Purley and Shadwell.

With the exception of the Mitcham station, all will be rebuilt on their existing sites. Construction is expected to commence in 2012.

Commissioner of London Fire Brigade, Ron Dobson, said: “I am pleased that we’ve been given the go-ahead to build nine new fire stations. They will be an important contribution to providing modern facilities for our firefighters”.

The new stations will offer firefighters with higher quality facilities including additional room for modern fire appliances and training. There will also be areas where staff can meet local people and pass on vital fire safety advice.
