New TfL scheme ‘to lower cost of buying electric vehicles’

July 12, 2011 - Staff

The new framework lower the cost of buying electric vehicles

Transport for London has unveiled a new procurement framework it says will allow public bodies in the capital to buy cheaper electric vehicles.

All public contracts over a set value must comply with EU procurement regulations, which includes advertising contracts in the Official Journal of the European Union.

TfL says its new framework will allow the Greater London Authority and other public bodies to buy electric vehicles “more promptly” from 16 pre-approved supplier, cutting ‘red tape’ and saving money.

City Hall says the framework – which is backed by major manufacturers – is a major step towards delivering the Mayor’s ambition to turn London into “the electric capital of Europe”.

GLA Environment Director Kulveer Ranger said the new guidelines would “encourage greener, cleaner choices when the time comes to replace the vehicles being used to carry out important services for Londoners.

The framework was launched on the same day the London Assembly’s Environment Committee heard that cost was a major obstacle in greater public take-up of electric vehicles.
