Mayor’s Question Time Postponed

March 16, 2005 - Staff

Today’s Mayor’s Question Time (MQT) has been postponed because Ken Livingstone is ill and has declined a request for his deputy, Nicky Gavron, to answer questions from London Assembly Members.

In a letter to Brian Coleman, the Chairman of the London Assembly, the Mayor wrote that "the decisions made and actions taken that Assembly Members raise as part of MQT are mine, and therefore it would be inappropriate for these questions to be put to anyone else on my behalf, including the Deputy Mayor."

Mr Coleman said: "It is regrettable that the Mayor is not fielding his deputy tomorrow to answer questions which are pertinent to all Londoners. Mayor’s Question Time is vital in ensuring that the Mayor and his officials are held to account. Assembly Members should not be delayed in fulfilling this important role."
