Londoners enjoy UK’s best quality water

July 14, 2010 - Martin Hoscik@MayorWatch

Thames says the London On Tap campaign has led to an increase in consumption
London’s tap water has been scored the best in the UK by the the Government’s Drinking Water Inspectorate for a third year in a major PR coup for Thames Water.

The latest Inspectorate report found that water drunk by Londoners in 2009 was 99.98% compliant with official standards against an average industry score of 99.95%. Only South West Water matched Thames’ score.

Thames Water chief executive Martin Baggs said the firm was “really proud” of the achievement.

Baggs also said that since the firm launched the London On Tap campaign “more Londoners than ever are now choosing to order our top-quality tap water in bars and restaurants.”

He added: “We supply 2.6bn litres of water a day, 365 days a year. That’s more than a tonne of water (over 1,000 litres) a week to each of our 8.7m water customers – all for a tenth of a penny per litre, 500 times less than bottled water.”

The firm, which serves homes in London and the Thames Valley, is currently engaged in a major programme of works to cut leakage and has achieved a 27% reduction over the past 5 years.
