London Celebrates St George

March 27, 2007 - Staff

Londoners will have the opportunity to celebrate England’s Patron Saint when the capital holds the fourth annual St George’s Day celebrations next month.

This year’s event will include a special focus on humour, with film screenings in Trafalgar Square on St George’s Day itself, which this year falls on a Monday.

Organised by the Mayor of London in association with the British Film Institute, Python (Monty) Pictures Ltd and Monty Python’s SPAMALOT, the free event will include a compilation of clips from well-known comedy series compiled by the BFI and representing the best of English humour. It will culminate with a special screening of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Other events include a weekend of free activities at Shakespeare’s Globe including the chance to perform lines from Shakespeare on the theatre’s famous stage and take part in workshops.

Saturday 21 April will see traditional English music and dance performances in Covent Garden presented by the Royal Society of St George. The society is also organising its annual parade at the Cenotaph, including a short service, wreath laying and march past.

London Mayor Ken Livingstone said the events “are growing in popularity and are an opportunity to highlight the best in English culture.”
