Livingstone Welcomes Queen’s Speech

November 15, 2006 - Staff

Mayor of London Ken Livingstone has welcomed the announcement in today’s Queen’s Speech that the Government will bring forward a bill to increase the powers of the Greater London Authority.

Speaking after the annual speech to Parliament the Mayor said he hoped “all parties in Parliament will join the Government backing greater devolution to London’s city government.”

Setting out the case for greater devolution Mr Livingstone said the capital “needs more affordable housing, better skills training and action to tackle climate change and the Government’s Queen’s Speech proposals will help deliver this.”

The Mayor also welcomed news that the Queen’s speech includes plans for a Climate Change Bill which he described as “a very welcome step forward.”

However highlighting an area of difference with the Government Mr Livingstone again called for the power to create a Single Waste Authority.
