Hughes Defends Campaign ‘Newspaper’

May 7, 2004 - Staff

LibDem Simon Hughes MP has defended a campaign newspaper which linked Tory rival Steve Norris with the Potters Par rail crash. The Norris camp had earlier condemned the Libdems for using "dishonest and cynical" tactics, promising to run "a positive campaign".

Speaking to BBC Radios 4’s Today show Hughes said: "The question I think London voters must be asked is whether they want a mayor who is in nobody’s pocket or whether they want a mayor who has during his candidacy had a direct financial interest in a company that has dealt with the rail service and the tube service and has made a profit from a company doing that."

Mr Hughes will launch his campaign manifesto later on Friday.
