GLA to mark Holocaust Memorial Day

January 25, 2010 - Staff

London's City HallCity Hall will host the Greater London Authority’s annual Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony tomorrow (Tuesday 26th January) which will include testimony from Holocaust survivors and young Londoners who have participated in the Holocaust Education Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz Project.

London Assembly Chair Darren Johnson will open the ceremony, which will include readings from Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Rabbi Miriam of the North Finchley Synagogue.

Holocaust survivors Gena Turgel MBE, who was 16 when the Nazi’s invaded Poland and bombed her home town, and Zigi Shipper, who survived for three years working in a metal factory in the Lodz ghetto before being sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau and Danzing concentration camps, will describe their experiences of concentration camps.

Participants from the Holocaust Education Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz Project will recount the impact visiting the concentration camp has had on them and read out a Statement of Commitment that the Mayor and Chair of the Assembly will sign as a declaration of support for the Holocaust Memorial. The Statement of Commitment will be contained in a book open for the public to sign at City Hall for the rest of the week.

The event is by invitation only and will be webcast live at: http://www.london.gov.uk/assembly/webcasts.jsp
