City Hall Lib Dems to question Virgin WiFi deal

April 2, 2012 - Martin Hoscik@MayorWatch

City Hall Liberal Democrats are 'concerned' the service may only be free for some users
Liberal Democrats at City Hall have expressed concern that non-Virgin Media customers will need to pay to use the Tube’s recently announced WiFi service.

Last month Transport for London announced it had struck a deal with the cable company under which it would provide travel information portals and public WiFi at 120 stations.

The WiFi, which will only work on platforms, will be available free until summer.

It will then be available at no cost to Virgin Media’s customers but non-customers will need pay on a Pay-As-You-Go or subscription basis.

TfL say non-Virgin customers may be able to use the service at no cost if they’re “a customer of a service provider that has a wholesale agreement with VM”.

Caroline Pidgeon, Leader of the Liberal Democrat group at City Hall, says she is “very concerned” that the service might only be free for some passengers and says costs for others “remain unclear”.

The Assembly Member says she has tabled questions “to clarify what this really means for passengers.”
