Boris Invites Londoners to Celebrate Veterans Day

June 17, 2008 - Staff

Boris Johnson has invited Londoners to attend the capital’s first ever Veterans Day event which will be held in Trafalgar Square on 27th June.

Mayor Johnson said the event would be “an important way of highlighting the contributions made by veterans of all ages and backgrounds and recognising and honouring the sacrifices they have made in defence of our country” and said he was “delighted” to support it.

Activities on the day will include an official veterans badge ceremony organised by the Ministry of Defence and a special exhibition called Helmand: The Soldier’s Story, which compares the lives of soldiers now and in the Afghan war period of 1879.

There will also be a live entertainment programme including the Grenadier Guards, the most senior regiment of the Guards Division of the British Army.

Plans to hold an annual event were first announced in March by former Mayor Ken Livingstone.

Entrance to the event is free.
