Boris drops in on TV’s Albert Square

July 20, 2009 by Staff

Boris_EastEndersResidents of BBC One’s EastEnders will get to meet the capital’s real-life Mayor later this year when London Mayor Boris Johnson makes a cameo appearance in the soap.

Scenes filmed last Friday will see Queen Vic Landlady Peggy Mitchell (played by Barbara Windsor) trying to track down the Mayor during a visit to the show’s fictional borough of Walford.

Unsuccessful, Peggy returns home and tells the Mitchell clan how she’d give him a piece of her mind if she ever sees him. However, much to everyone’s amusement, when Boris Johnson unexpectedly walks into the Queen Vic Peggy is utterly charmed by him, not to mention a little flirtatious.

Series producer Diederick Santer said: “EastEnders has always had a good relationship with the Mayor’s office, and we are delighted that Boris Johnson is coming to spend some time with us.”

“We couldn’t let the visit pass without the Mayor entering London’s most famous pub, the Queen Vic, and meeting its formidable and politically-active landlady Peggy Mitchell.”

Johnson said it was “a tremendous honour to step inside that most venerable of London landmarks, the Queen Vic, and share a scene with another of the capital’s icons, the fabulous Barbara Windsor.”

Johnson’s scene is expected to air during the Autumn.
