Boris Appoints Richard Barnes Deputy Mayor

May 6, 2008 - Staff

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has appointed Assembly Member Richard Barnes as his Deputy Mayor.

Mr Barnes was first elected to the Assembly in May 2000 and represents the Ealing and Hillingdon constituency. He was widely praised for his chairmanship of the 7 July Review Committee and has previously said airport operators should carry the costs of increased airport security.

In May 2006 Mr Barnes condemned “the excessive police presence” at a Metropolitan Police operation to remove banners and placards belonging to the anti-war campaigner Brian Haw. The force sent 78 officers in what Mr Barnes suggested was a case of the Met doing “Tony Blair’s bidding.”

Mayor Johnson has also appointed newly elected Assembly Member Kit Malthouse to work with him on policing issues and Bexley Councillor Ian Clement on Government Relations.

Leader of Westminster City Council Sir Simon Milton will be the Mayor’s senior adviser on planning issues.

Mayor Johnson said he was “happy to welcome into City Hall, Ian Clement and Simon Milton, two
experienced public servants who have a fantastic record of delivery in
local government.”

“I have no doubt that this team will back me all the way in working tirelessly for London over the coming years.”
