As the contest to become Labour’s next mayoral candidate hots up, party members are finding their inboxes filled with a wave of unrequested emails pitching the merits of each contender and soliciting the recipient’s support.

The latest missive went to members in Croydon South tonight and contains an enthusiastic endorsement of Sadiq Khan’s housing policy – a mix of Ken Livingstone’s 2012 not-for-profit lettings agency and “a campaign for powers to control rents” which Khan must surely know the Government won’t give him – by Margaret Hodge MP.

Hodge signs off the email by urging the recipient to “join us and back Sadiq Khan for London.”

But timing doesn’t to be Team Khan’s strong point – the Croydon South party met last night and agreed to nominate David Lammy and Tessa Jowell, both of whom have been busy thanking local members on Twitter.

Thank you @CroydonSouthLab for nominating me to be the next Mayor! Let's together deliver the new leadership our city needs.

Hodge may believe Khan’s deal for renters is “impressive” but his timekeeping seems somewhat less so.

Speaking of emails, there’s some disquiet about how quickly Khan was able to get in touch with party members following his not so surprising decision to seek the nomination.

Rivals only got access to the party’s London membership list after they’d stumped up £500 and handed over their application form.

Yet one reader claims Khan was “whizzing out emails and text messages to those on the Labour Party’s London membership list within hours of his announcing his candidature.”

If true, Khan’s ability to guess the contact details of thousands of party members is certainly more “impressive” than his knowledge of when they meet!
