Aslef to ballot Tube drivers over Boxing Day dispute

November 13, 2012 - Martin Hoscik@MayorWatch

London Underground drivers are to be balloted for strike action after the Aslef union rejected proposals over pay and holiday in return for working on Boxing Day.

The union has been seeking extra pay for its members and a day off in lieu for working on the bank holiday.

It has rejected an LU proposal to schedule drivers to be on annual leave on Boxing Day and then allow them to volunteer to work the day and exchange one day’s annual leave for pay, allow them remain on annual leave, or work Boxing Day and take annual leave on another day.

Aslef says it will now ballot members for strike action.

Howard Collins, LU’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “We have been in discussions with the Aslef leadership to find a way to end this dispute and have made them what we believe is a very fair offer.”

“Further industrial action will not achieve anything and I would urge the Aslef leadership to take this offer to their members and work towards resolving this dispute.”

The result of the ballot will be announced on December 17th.
