London Assembly Members will tomorrow question Mayor Boris Johnson on his draft budget for the coming financial year.

The Mayor’s £14.6 billion budget sets out spending plans for the Greater London Authority and its functional bodies – Transport for London, the London Fire & Emergency Planning Authority and the new Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime.

This year’s budget also includes provision for the Olympic Park Legacy Company.

Tomorrow’s meeting is the first of a two stage process.

Following questions to the Mayor, Assembly Members will be able to propose amendments to the budget which can be passed with a simple majority vote.

The Mayor has a duty to respond to any amendments when he presents his final budget to the Assembly on 9 February but is not obliged to accept them.

The final budget can only be amended by a two-thirds majority of AMs. With 11 Conservative members on the 25-strong Assembly, Mayor Johnson is guaranteed his budget will pass unamended.

This year’s overall budget will remain in place regardless of the outcome of May’s election, however a new Mayor would be free to end existing schemes and allocate spending to their own policies and initiatives.

Tomorrow’s meeting will take place from 10am in The Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).
