Councils participating in the South London Waste Partnership (Croydon, Kingston, Merton and Sutton) are asking residents for their views on waste management. Residents having until 31st October to ensure their views are heard and help shape the partnership’s policies.
Following feedback from residents and businesses in the partnership boroughs the South London Waste Plan will identify suitable locations for potential waste management facilities across the four boroughs.
According to official figures the four boroughs generate half a million tonnes of rubbish every year with over 70% currently going to landfill.
Councillor David Simpson from Merton Council said the boroughs “want to hear the views and any concerns residents, businesses and others may have about where we should manage the rubbish we all produce. Merton households produce over 75,000 tonnes of waste annually - almost one tonne per year for each household.”
The problem, of course, with this type of ‘consultation’ is that whatever is said, and whoever says it, the laws are controlled almost completely by the European Union and its ‘targets’. The UK authorities have as little control over changing the rules as the public. So basically the only suggestions which will count will be those which marry in with the EU rules. I hope that this partnership is spelling this out to potential respondents…of course when you know how detailed and prescriptive these rules are, you realise there is little point in responding. Many other such ‘consultations’ elsewhere in the country have been mere window dressing for plans to site more incinerators in the panic to do the EU’s bidding. Assuming that is the case, if you write: “yes please, I want an incinerator in my back garden and I want it NOW”, you are a valued consultee and your view will be taken on board. If you do not, then don’t bother…
