Victorian London photos go on display

An exhibition of photos showing the capital’s Victorian past will be on display from 13th December at Church Farmhouse Museum in Barnet.  The Historic Views of London exhibition contains images from former Barnet resident Bernard Howarth-Loomes’s personal collection, now held by National Museums Scotland in Edinburgh.

Running until 16th March 2009 the exhibition contains scenes from across the capital including steam boats on the River Thames, Euston Arch, Crystal Palace, the Kodak factory at Harrow and views of 19th Century streets crowded with people and traffic.

The exhibition is based on a new book also entitled Historic Views of London edited by historian, and Barnet borough resident Dr Ann Saunders, which reprints over half of the 350 photographs of Greater London which Howarth-Loomes allowed the National Monuments Record collection to copy.

Barnet Councillor Matthew Offord said the exhibition “allows residents to gain a fascinating and unique glimpse of London’s past. We are lucky to have the collection returning to the borough after many years and I hope residents will be able take this opportunity to view the many fantastic images within it.”
