The latest YouGov poll for the Evening Standard shows Dame Tessa Jowell remains the public’s preferred Labour candidate for Mayor in 2016.

YouGov asked 1,002 voters who they’d pick from a list containing declared candidates David Lammy MP and transport expert Christian Wolmar, and likely candidates including Dame Tessa and Margaret Hodge MP.

Across all respondents Dame Tessa leads the pack with the support of 12% of those naming a preferred runner. She’s also the most popular choice among Labour supporters with the backing of 16%.

When those answering “Don’t know” and “None of the Above” are excluded she has the support of 28% of the public, double the 14% naming Diane Abbott, Margaret Hodge and Sadiq Khan.

Mr Lammy, who last month broke ranks to formally declare his interest in the post, is narrowly behind the trio with 13%.

Today’s poll suggests Dame Tessa continues to enjoy widespread support among non-Labour supporters with the backing of 36% of Tories, 45% of LibDems and 21% of UKIP voters.

She also enjoys the majority support across all age groups except 18-24 year olds where Tooting MP Sadiq Khan leads her by 4% with the backing of 25%.

London’s electoral system means any Mayor needs to win 50.01% of the votes cast, making the backing of other parties’ voters essential to victory.
