| Customer Reviews: Inconsistent albums June 19, 2010 BS on parade 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've been listening to his Best Of Genius for about seven years. I love it. Having said that, I had never bought any of his albums as I didn't believe he was a consistent albums artist. And I think I've been proved right. If you own that Best Of then I recommend leaving it at that. I know that I personally will always be reaching for that Best Of over any of these albums every time I decide to listen to Zevon.
I've reviewed all five CDs. To read them click on the comment box of this review (warning, they might be a bit repetitive if you read them one after the other).
The only extra thing to mention is that the first three albums (Warren Zevon, Excitable Boy and Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School) are the quieter 80's masters and not the expanded remasters that are available separately. Stand in the Fire and The Envoy are almost the same volume as modern post '96 CDs but are again not the expanded remasters that you can buy separately.
I think it's fair that we can extrapolate from this that all other albums in this budget boxset series are old masters instead of any new remasters that have since replaced them.
Everything the title promises April 14, 2010 Geert Van Gelder (Brasschaat, Belgium) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The boxes "Original Album Series" are surprisingly small, because the CD's are in replica-covers of the original albums. Therefore, the sleeve-notes are in such small print that some of them are barely readable, but never mind that. This box contains the first 5 (solo-)albums Warren Zevon ever made, including the live album "Stand in the Fire". The music is everything you can expect from Warren Zevon: strong melodies and intelligent, sometimes rather sarcastic, even "biting" lyrics that strike the way they should. The box contains all of Zevons hits of the 70's and, more important, his third album "Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School", which is very hard to find (for a reasonable price, that is). This Warren Zevon box is a real bargain, BIG quality for a small price. Buyers should check, however, if the 11th song on "Bad Luck Streak...", "Bed of Coals", runs the full five minutes. On some copies, the song stops after 2:57, giving 2 minutes of silence until the next (last) song "Wild Age" starts; pity. Don't let this keep you from ordering the box, Amazon gallantly refunded mine...
A bargain intro to one of the GREAT American song writers February 26, 2010 Mr. A. W. Riggs (Wallington, Surrey United Kingdom) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Warren Zevon has left us a back catalogue that is different & challenging, for a bargain price these 5 records represent some of his best work. Buy these then the rest of his records, then rebuy these records with the sleeve notes etc. These are bargain boxes but the sleeves are poorly printed i.e. you can't read them. This should not put you off these brilliant records. Warren Zevon left us a few years ago, renowned for his lifestyle the usual drink & drugs etc BUT his songs are up there with Young, Dylan & Newman. BUY ALL HIS RECORDS AND SPREAD THE WORD.
