4 out of 5 stars Very good but....   January 29, 2010

Of course it is great, in fact incredible, that Esoteric is re-issuing the Wigwam and Pohjola titles. Life has new meaning! While this album, Pohjola's third actually, is quite good, it is over-shadowed by the first two:
Pihkasilmä kaarnakorva - the first and absolutely brilliant, a classic
Harakka bialoipokku (B the Magpie) - also bloody brilliant
So, the Oldfield sound on Mathemetician is nice but the first two albums are more thrilling and essential.
So, message to Esoteric: when will you release Pihkasilmä kaarnakorva?
PS. what about the first Jukka Gustavson album and the early Jukka Tolonen albums?!!
Thank you very much.

5 out of 5 stars The "original" version - a bit of a treasure.   January 25, 2010

Not easy to define in terms of genre - but then again; so what.
A fascinating recording by this relatively unknown - Pekka Pohjola; bass player extraordinaire.
Joined by Mike Oldfield who graces this with some GREAT guitar work and superb percussionist Pierre Moerlin. Sally Oldfield also adds some vocal 'interpretations'.
There's a fusion aspect to this but I guess one cannot escape the "Prog" tag.
Part of the CD features some of Pohjola's Finnish musical friends and these cannot be dismissed. It's all very cohesive and surprisingly original.
This has been released for the first time on CD - quite a surprise; I remember the vinyl!! It has been available under its Finnish name - "Keesojen Lehto"!
Pohjola -who died in November 2008 - is a gifted musician and a talented bass player who opens up the boundaries music wise; there is an avante guarde quality to this.
"The Perceived Journey" opens things and rather rock/jazz fusion; no Oldfield on this one but the "Finnish Band" sound real good - a pleasing opener. "Hands Straighten the Water" starts very baroque with plaintive harpsichord and acoustic guitar slowly building to a vocal/piano/guitar climax - a gentle song. the "title" track and a good centre piece with Pohjola, Oldfield and Pierre Moerlin working hard as this develops - yet again, this has a 'fusion feel' - Oldfield's guitar and Moerlin's percussion really build here underpinned by Pohjola's strong bass work and keyboards. "Consequences of Head Bending" is a two-parter, with the Pohjola/Oldfield/Moerlin Band starting things off in a kind of avante guarde manner; here Pekka's bass is an absolute joy! The second part features the Finnish crew with Oldfield and Moerlin somewhere in the mix. The tempo in the section really picks up and we are back to something more Rock/Fusion.
Finally - "False Start of the Shadows" - well pure slapstick! Crazy harpsichord, bar room piano, mandolin (no tubular bells!), drums and a rather "high" Sally Oldfield who sounds as if she's had a few!
Great playing and - at times - great fun! There is a playful aspect to one or two of the tracks.
The CD has been remastered and featured the original artwork and an interesting history of the recording.
I am so pleased this has been re-discovered. It was actually recorded a few miles down the road from where I live!
It's on the "Esoteric" label which is really quite appropriate!!!
