Fantastic! Folk-Rock with a social conscience at its very best November 12, 2008

What a fantastic album from one of the best singer-songwriters this country has ever produced. Always one to tweak at both the personal and political heartstrings, with this latest album, Robb Johnson has delivered everything we have come to expect from him, and more!
By developing a rocking four piece band, with John Forrester on bass, Roger Watson on squeezebox and Charlie Waygood on drums, Robb Johnson has found a whole new platform for his unique blend of socially conscious folk-rock balladeering. The result is impressive; superb production, excellent music, mind-blowing lyrics and messages that will make you stop and reconsider your place this crazy world.
This album is very much a `condition of Albion' commentary on modern Britain, with Robb lamenting the ascendancy of celebrity culture and the failures of society to fight the rise of greed and naked capitalism. Songs such as Saturday Night in Albion, Little Angels, and Hard Money serve as brilliant and prime examples of this.
However, Robb has always had a lighter and more romantic side to his music and one that looks more closely at the personal world of love and life. This is represented on this album by the haunting, The Great West Road as well as Postcard from Blackpool, with its heartfelt sentiments of distance and loss, and the engaging Two Left Feet. He also has the ability to raise a smile from the most unlikely sources, and The Bigger the Car and Even Steve McQueen, do this admirably (even without the use of Gaffer Tape!).
There is also no shortage of hard-hitting, bang-up-to-date, `in your face', political material on this album, as one might expect, with both I am Not at War and The Prince and Pt Gentle, powerfully bringing home the true meanings of the war in Iraq, while Soweto and The Spirit of 45 bring a historical perspective to the widening chasm between wealth and poverty in Modern Britain.
If you're already a Robb Johnson fan, you will love this new album so buy it now! If you are new to this fabulous artist, this album represents a great and accessible way into his music and a perfect starting point for getting to know him before exploring his extensive back catalogue. You can even (and should) get up and dance around the room to it! It is also an absolute bargain at this price with free postage and I promise you will not be disappointed.
