Hmmm,a mixed bag with some classic tracks April 28, 2009 David Sandilands (Bristol, UK) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Based on my memories of Gotta See Jane,Ghost In My House and Indiana Wants Me plus the glowing reviews here on Amazon, I thought I should investigate this 'best of' R Dean Taylor. After 1 sympathetic listen I think the tracks I already knew are still great, so 4 stars for Ghost and Indiana and 5 for Jane. 'Backstreet' is also worthy of 4 stars but the rest? Well, sadly, none of them did much for me; so-so covers and some unexciting originals. I'll give it a couple more spins for the sake of the great tracks I've singled out above and give an update if I change my opinion.
At the moment I'd say get it for the 4 good tracks and add them to your northern soul playlist because they are classics of that genre.

R Dean Taylor was a country music artist in Canada in the late 50s and his single of At the High School Dance has been included on one of the Early Canadian Rockers CDs.
By 1964 he cut a Beatles novelty called Ladybug stay away from that Beatle which Motown never released but its available on one of the Shabby Road series of Beatles Novelties Recording for Motown where he had a number of hit singles which reached a peak in 1972 with Indiana wants me only ended when its Rare Earth sub folded.
Theres a website where you can usually buy his new music
Motown meets singer songwriter September 4, 2007 D. J. H. Thorn (Hull, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This collection from the late 1960s and early 1970s represents a rare opportunity to experience how Motown could energise the music of so-called 'singer songwriters.' Taylor wrote most of his own material, often in collaboration with members of Motown's Holland/Dozier/Holland team. As a result, you keep hearing the kind of backing more usually heard on records by the likes of The Four Tops. The result is often irresistible. Songs such as 'Let's Go Somewhere' and 'Just Like In The Movies' have this stamp. Yet sometimes the Motown influence isn't as obvious, as on James Taylor's 'Fire And Rain'. His slightly drawling voice reminds you that he's in an unexpected recording environment, but, at its best, the overall effect is exhilarating.
As with many compilations of artists on the margins of fame, the quality of the material tends to decline a little as it progresses. The big hitters are all in the first half: 'Gotta See Jane,' 'There's A Ghost In My House' and 'Indiana Wants Me.' The remaining songs are worth hearing for the style in which they're recorded, almost all of them good or very good songs, but none of them great. 'Two Of Us' seems a strange choice from the Lennon/McCartney catalogue, one of the lesser songs from 'Let It Be,' but this is still an entertaining compilation.
Very good stuff from the 60's and 70's August 28, 2006 Ges Brown (Infinity & Beyond) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Being a 50/60's kid I heard most of the songs when they first hit the charts and they were brilliant, especially Indiana, Jane and Ghost. Just bought this CD for my 60's kit as couldn't afford an Album back then, and nothings changed. good stuff.buy it.
PS. He's still with us despite what one reviewer said above!
