Caveat Emptor July 28, 2010 A. Shell (UK) Surprised and Disappointed
After a lot of research this seemed to be the only camera that had all the features I wanted and additionally had incredibly good reviews so I bought one. Initial impressions were that colour and video were very good, but clarity of normal photos was not what I expected. I could not find any improvement in resolution compared with my previous camera - a Canon Powershot S1 of only 3 MP. It was fairly pleasant to use although the menu is counter intuitive. I haven't worked out if the problem is poor focus or poor performance from the stabilisation system or some other factor.
Battery life was poor - solved though by purchasing a second battery. The large screen is good, but why would anyone build a camera without a viewfinder? I consider it essential now for outdoor shots.
The first problem I had was the zoom lever. It has a nice light action and is - or should be - self centering. Mine was, but only sometimes. You know it hasn't self centered when your focal length continues to change after you have nudged the lever, or the camera fails to take a shot when you press the button - very annoying. I was on the point of sending it back but reluctantly waited for it to get worse as it was only an intermittent problem. It has actually improved a bit but that may just be due to the warmer weather.
The second problem was a little chip - microscopic almost and hardly noticeable - that suddenly appeared in the middle of the lens. I assumed it must be my fault and contacted Panasonic. I was told it would cost about £180 to repair. It did not affect most photos at first, however there are many vertical marks on the middle of the lens now and I've had to stop using it. What the heck are these? I treated this lens in the same way as my last camera - the Canon S1, which took approx 80K shots over 4 years and lost its lens cap part way through and that lens is still fine.
A third observation is that after a very short time the camera looked scruffy as the coating on the silver strip on top has worn away in places. The same thing has happened with the silver strip on the bottom and the serial number there has totally gone. I have kept the camera in a case at all times except when being used, so think this is very shoddy.
My experience is so different from the majority of the reviews that I almost wonder if I've got a fake - but can't really imagine anyone going to the trouble of making a working fake camera, so it is an unsolved mystery, but I'll be avoiding Panasonic cameras in future and probably going back to Canon.
I compared it recently at full zoom with a friends Canon SX210. Admittedly the Canon compact had slightly more zoom, but there was no comparison in the results. His were nice and clear and mine rather blurry and lacking in detail. I don't think it was due to the marks on the lens which tend to cause flare etc.
Writing this review has prompted me to look again at the marks on the lens and as they are all vertical and match the direction of sliding of the lens cover in that area, I'm wondering if that is what caused them . . . think I will try contacting Panasonic again and will aim to get back here with an update.
WOW! July 27, 2010 David Purchased this camera to replace my aging Canon Ixus 400, which really produced great shots!
I took an age to decide on which upgrade, considering several makes including Canon again.
Finally decided on this model over the later TZ8 & TZ10, which I feel have un-needed add-on gimmicks, not really required on a camera..
To say i'm impressed is an understatement. Really well pleased with the quality & clarity of the photos this camera takes. Speed of operation is also great, which was one of the factors of my decision to purchase this model..
All in all, great camera, def worth the price I paid (well reduced!)
Great camera with great pictures July 27, 2010 Einoras Bernotas (N. Ireland) Very good camera. Great pictures. Great HD video. But make sure you buy at least 8 GB SDHC card, and fast one, such as Sandisk Extreme 3 or similar with at least 150x write speed. Overall - 5 stars of 5. :)
Panazonic TZ7 July 27, 2010 Khalil Khan hmmm, we were considering buying the newer tz10 but altimatley decided to go with this TZ7 ... the picture quality is absolutly fantastic. i am not a photographer however the results speak for them selves ! the picture / image quality is just perfect, particularly cosidering this is a pocket size camera and not a SLR or DSLR. the camera was a no brainer after comparing the newer TZ10 and TZ7 which we bought. the TZ10 newer and more expensive has GPS for taging the photographs and TZ7 does not , ultimiatly other than that the two are very much alike and picture quality is just as good as one another therefore we bought the cheaper TZ7! the HD video is pretty good too but i have a panasonic camcorder for that but this quality for HD video from this compact camera is very very good, indeed.
its a fantastic camera , with face recognition , easy controls , and AI (artifical inteligence) built in to assist should you choose to use it, is very good , this is an idiot proof camera ! built quality is great oosing class ! dont delay buy today ! thanks for reading, good luck with your purchase.
Great little camera, with excellent zoom July 26, 2010 nix255 I bought this camera as an upgrade to an older digital camera I had that was getting too slow and had become irritating. The Lumix is a perfect replacement, it's smaller than my previous Nikon Coolpix and has a massive zoom in comparison. It is fast to start up and fast to save images to the card, which is just what I wanted.
It takes a little while to get used to the settings and get everything set up to suit your own style, but now it's an awesome camera and I've taken some great shots. The macro settings allow you get really close up to flowers and nature, and the zoom allows you to zoom right in on subjects further away.
The camera is small enough to drop in my handbag and it's brilliant to have such a great tool with me where ever I go.
