Older Londoners Celebrated

Older Londoners are being encouraged to join the Big Chair Dance at this year’s Capital Age Festival next month.

The festival celebrates the contribution older Londoners make the capital and is organised by the  London Older People’s Strategies Group (LOPSG) in partnership with Entelechy Arts and East London Dance with support from the Mayor of London.

This year’s event includes performances by tap legend Will Gaines and Jamaican jazz artist Totlyn Jackson plus activities in and around the Southbank Centre.

Organisers say the highlight of the day will be the Big Chair Dance which has been specially devised by professional choreographers for older dancers of all abilities to perform sitting down. The dance has been commissioned to coincide with Big Dance 2008, the citywide weeklong celebration of dance that runs from 5-13 July.

Deputy Mayor Richard Barnes says “Older Londoners make an enormous contribution to the social, economic and cultural life of the capital and the Mayor has made it clear that we will work to improve our city for all Londoners, including the more than one million pensioners who live here.”

“This means looking at the key issues of concern to older Londoners, but also ensuring they have the opportunity to participate in a range of social activities.”

Capital Age Festival takes place at the Southbank Centre on Friday 11 July.
