O2 customers gain free access to Tube WiFi

Mobile network O2 has struck a deal with Virgin Media to give its customers free access to the Tube’s WiFi service.

From June O2 users will be automatically registered with the service, allowing them to access the web without needing to register or enter a password.

When it launched last July the WiFi service offered free access to all passengers for a limited time. Virgin Media later introduced per day charging for customers of rival networks.

EE and Vodafone have since struck wholesale agreements to give their customers access as part of their usual network tariff.

The latest deal means the majority of mobile customers will now be able to check emails and go online while waiting for a Tube without having to make any additional payment.

Virgin Media also confirmed another 12 London Underground stations, including Bank, Baker Street and Earl’s Court, will have their WiFi service switched on this week.

Mark Williamson, Head of London WiFi at Virgin Media said: “WiFi on London Underground has gone from strength to strength and we’re delighted the majority of Londoners are staying connected for no extra cost.”

Our customers want to stay connected wherever they are and will soon be able to check their email, update their Facebook status, shop online, book their next holiday and stay connected to their friends and family right across Tube stations in Central London.”
