New 2012 Canoe Venue Named

It’s been confirmed that the venue for the London 2012 Canoe/Kayak Slalom events will be situated at the Showground in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire.

Organisers say the venue will become a White Water Canoe Centre after the Games, forming part of the Olympic legacy.

The venue was chosen after the nearby original Spitalbrook site was found to be contaminated.

The venue change has been approved by the International Canoe Federation (ICF), the International Olympic Committee, and the British Olympic Association.

Simon Toulson, General Secretary of the ICF, said: “The ICF has worked closely with the London Organising Committee and the British Canoe Union on the two sites. The new site looks ideal with a natural setting, convenient for spectators and athletes. It has the potential to be an excellent leisure canoeing centre for the community post-Games.”

  1. hope that there wil be extensive consultation about design and build of the olympic aquatics centre as there are many practical faults with watersports centres about particularly ones in london

docklands sailing centre- build with poor materials
and little personal equipment PFD storage had to use 30 year old pontoon shed

stubbers - sailboat storage built with RSJ obstuction behind mast high doors

London regatta centre built with many trip hazzards and slipway too narrow to carry boats onto pontoons

dorney lake- no slipway access to water at centre
    end

shadwell basin-office floods from changing rooms

nottingham slalom course- cant get out of water very well without assistance , no emergency access to edge of course
