MPA Launches Stop and Search DVD

The capital’s police authority has launched a new educational DVD explaining how the police use stop and search powers.

The ‘Go Wisely - everything you need to know about stop and search’ DVD will be used as part of an overall training package for the police in how to use stop and search appropriately, and inform the public, especially young people, of their rights when they are stopped or searched.

According to MPA member John Roberts being stopped and searched by officers will the first contact many people have with the police. “It is crucial that officers are professional and respectful when they use the tactic. The public also need to understand why the police use this tool, as well as what their rights are during a stop and search procedure” says Roberts.

The DVD has been produced by the Metropolitan Police Authority in
collaboration with the Met Police, Safer London Foundation, Greater
Manchester Police Authority and community groups in London and
Manchester. The MPA also sought input from Liberty “to ensure that it
provides a balanced picture.”

Roberts urges all Londoners to: “Watch the DVD. Think about it. Talk about it. And learn from it. The police are here to protect you and help your community lead their lives in safety.”

Content from the DVD along with supporting material from the ‘Go Wisely’ initiative can be found on the MPA website.
