Jubilee line is thirty years old

May 1, 2009 - Staff

London’s Jubilee line celebrates its 30th birthday today, having first opened for passenger services on 1 May 1979.

In the three decades since it opened the line, which covers 36.2km (22.5 miles) and serves 27 stations, has seen usage increase from 38 million passengers a year to 186 million.

To celebrate the anniversary London Underground station staff will hold a series of charity fundraising days, starting with a fundraising day on 12 May to support local charity St. Luke’s hospice.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “The Jubilee Line and everyone connected to it over the last thirty years deserve plaudits for the huge amount of work they have put in to getting Londoners around our city as quickly and as safely as possible. However it is paramount that during its anniversary year the line receives the massive upgrade that is underway. I appreciate the patience regular passengers have shown as this huge investment takes place. They should be assured that by the end of the year the Jubilee Line will be in a position to offer even better services.”

Local charity days:
12/05/09: Wembley Park group (Stanmore, Canons Park, Kingsbury, Wembley Park and Neasden)
14/05/09: Stratford group (Canning Town, North Greenwich, Stratford, West Ham stations)
17/09/09: Canary Wharf group (Canada Water and Canary Wharf stations).  07/10/09: London Bridge group (Southwark, London Bridge and Bermondsey stations)
24/11/09: Willesden Green group (Dollis Hill, Willesden Green, Kilburn, West Hampstead, Finchley Road, Swiss Cottage, St. John’s Wood)
