In 1998 the Government held a referendum to determine whether a Greater London Authority should be set up. The eventual 'yes' vote led to the re-establishment of London-wide government after an absence of 14 years.
Following the 1998 referendum the first Greater London Authority elections took place in 2000.
Controversy over the selection of the Labour and Conservative candidates led to an election like none other seen in British politics which was ultimately won by the independent Ken Livingstone.
For the first time in two decades Londoners had a chance to vote in an election based on the record of an incumbent.
Steve Norris took on Ken Livingstone, this time standing as the official Labour candidate, for a second time whilst the Liberal Democrats selected London MP Simon Hughes over 200 contender Susan Kramer.
