Final Safer Transport Team Deploys

Yesterday saw the deployment of the 21st and final Safer Transport Team which are designed to deliver on Ken Livingstone’s promise of a safer traveling experience on public transport.

The teams are made up of 18 Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), two sergeants and one police constable and have been deployed in 21 outer London boroughs “to provide extra visibility and reassurance to passengers, tackle crime and anti-social behaviour on buses and trams and work with the British Transport Police to improve safety at train and tube stations.”

Speaking yesterday Mr Livingstone the extra officers were “making public transport a safer environment for Londoners.”

The Mayor pointed to recent successes in Kingston’s Safer Transport team who he says in four weeks have “stopped 138 people for non payment and anti social behaviour, participated in the 10 arrests of people suspected of robbery and identified 5 people for criminal damage. ”
