Boris ponders study into immigrant amnesty

Boris Johnson has said he is considering commissioning a study into the possibility of an amnesty for London’s estimated 400,000 illegal immigrants. The Mayor says he wants to look at ways people who have been in the UK for a “very substantial period” could earn the right to stay however he appeared to be at odds with his Assembly colleagues who last month voted against a motion calling for a similar anmesty.

Mayor and Assembly Chairman host citizenship ceremony

Boris Johnson and London Assembly Chair Jennette Arnold hosted the first ever London-wide Citizenship ceremony at City Hall earlier today, awarding a certificate and commemorative gifts to those taking their oath of allegiance.

Assembly backs call for illegal immigrant amnesty

Members on the London Assembly today backed calls for a scheme to allow so-called irregular migrants “who have been in the UK for many years” to earn UK citizenship. The motion, proposed by Green Party AM Darren Johnson was also backed by Labour and Liberal Democrat Assembly Members.

Bromley launches elderly householder safety scheme

Bromley Council has teamed up with Age Concern, the London Fire Brigade and Metropolitan Police to compile a new information pack designed to help older people feel safer in their own homes. The ‘Safe as Houses’ packs include a ‘Nominated Neighbour’ card which enables older and more vulnerable people to tell unexpected callers to contact a nominated neighbour who lives nearby.

London Eye Lights Up For Gay Pride

For three nights starting tonight (Thursday) the London Eye will be lit in the colours of the Gay Pride rainbow flag in homage to the 40 year anniversary of its creation.

Older Londoners Celebrated

Older Londoners are being encouraged to join the Big Chair Dance at this year’s Capital Age Festival which takes place at the Southbank Centre on Friday 11 July as the capital celebrates the contribution older citizens make.
