A new exhibition focussing on the involvement of the middle classes in slavery opens at Museum of London Docklands today (14 November 2008). Museum bosses say the exhibition is designed to expel “the myth that the archetypal slave-owner was sitting on a porch in the Caribbean surveying his plantations” and looks at the individuals and businesses of Marylebone who received compensation when slavery was abolished in the 1830s.
Residents in outer London will be able to enjoy a series of live music performances after Mayor Boris Johnson announced he’s sponsoring the London Jazz Festival to host events in Barnet, Greenwich, Kingston, Newham, Richmond and Waltham Forest.
The 2008 Visit London awards are to be sponsored by UK airline Virgin Atlantic, it was announced earlier this week. The annual awards, which will take place on 27 November at the Royal Albert Hall, recognise excellence in London’s tourism sector.

Britain’s thousand year struggle for civil liberties and freedoms is explored in a major new exhibition at the British Library. Taking Liberties: The struggle for Britain’s Freedoms and Rights (31 October 2008–1 March 2009, admission free) gives visitors an opportunity, and celebrates the forgotten pioneers who helped win the liberties many of us now take for granted.

The annual Trafalgar Square Christmas tree lighting ceremony is to be held on 4th December, the day will also mark the start of a free two week carol singing festival which is being supported by the Mayor of London.
