Boris Johnson yesterday announced that 30 police transport teams are to be deployed at major transport hubs across the capital after three pilot teams successfully reduced crimes by more than a third. The announcement was made during a visit to Bexleyheath by Mayor Johnson, Transport Commissioner Peter Hendy and Metropolitan Police Commander Rod Jarman.
Boris Johnson’s first outing as Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority saw the Mayor come under fire for failing to consult members on the future of Sir Ian Blair. This morning’s meeting also heard a call for the Mayor to take a lead in talking up the positive contribution made by London’s youth.
London Mayor Boris Johnson has told the Home Secretary he believes the Metropolitan Police needs “a fairly lengthy consolidation period” before a permanent successor to Sir Ian Blair is appointed. The Mayor’s comment were made in a letter sent to Jacqui Smith and released this evening by City Hall.
After intense speculation this afternoon Sir Ian Blair has confirmed he is standing down as Metropolitan Police Commissioner with effect from December 1st. Sir Ian said he would have preferred to stay on until 2010 but that Mayor of London Boris Johnson had yesterday told him he wanted to see a change of leadership.

Met Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair is expected to announce his resignation later today after months of both speculation about his future and calls for him to stand down and comes after media claims that he paid public money to a close friend to sharpen his image.
Boris Johnson will chair his first meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority at City Hall on Monday 6th October 2008. The meeting will be the first of the full Authority to be held since new powers enabling the Mayor to chair the Authority or appoint a chair came into effect.
