It’s all change on the London Assembly as the Conservatives increase their number of seats to eleven (up 2), the Liberal Democrats drop two and the One London party loose both of their seats.

It’s all change on the London Assembly as the Conservatives increased their number of seats to eleven (up 2), the Liberal Democrats lost two and the One London party lost both of their seats.

Despite fears that they would loose their places on the Assembly the Greens kept both of their seats and the British National Party increased on their 2004 share of the vote to scoop a seat.

For the Conservatives the story wasn’t entirely positive with the loss of the Brent and Harrow constituency seat to Labour’s Navin Shah but the party held their remaining 8 seats and on a record turnout also took three of the London-wide seats.

There was obvious disappointment for the Liberal Democrats who not only failed to win either of their target constituency seats but also lost two of the London-wide seats they won in 2004 to end up with just three Assembly places.v

The BNP broke through the 5% barrier giving a seat to Mayoral candidate Richard Barnbrook.

He started the election widely viewed as a clown with no chance of winning but almost 2 days after voting begun in the third Greater London Authority elections Boris Johnson was confirmed as the new Mayor of London.

Throughout the election several polls predicted a comfortable double digit margin of victory for Mr Johnson but in the end he secured a total of 1,168,738 votes against Ken Livingstone’s 1,028,966.

LibDem candidate Brian Paddick limped into third place with just 236,685 - almost 50,000 less than Simon Hughes scored for the party in 2004.

The results for the other seven Mayoral candidates were Siân Berry (Green Party) 77,374 votes, Richard Barnbrook (British National Party) 69,710 votes, Alan Craig (Christian Peoples Alliance and Christian Party) 39,249 votes, Gerard Batten (UK Independence Party) 22,422 votes, Lindsey German (Left List) 16,796 votes, Matt O’Connor (English Democrats) 10,695 and Winston McKenzie (Independent) 5,389 votes.

In his acceptance speech a measured Mr Johnson thanked his family and campaign team as well as those Londoners who voted for him.

He also sought to reach out to those who didn’t support him and paid warm tribute to his defeated rival who vowed to help the new Mayor.

After the declaration Johnson and Livingstone held a private meeting in a side room - see picture above.

Alan Craig, Leader of the Christian Peoples Alliance, has called on voters to back his party by voting for the on the peach-coloured London Assembly list ballot paper.

Alan Craig, Leader of the Christian Peoples Alliance, has called on voters to back his party by voting for the on the peach-coloured London Assembly list ballot paper. To win a seat a party needs to secure around 100,000 votes.

Speaking earlier today Mr Craig said “The word has got out and I can see real momentum in our campaign to hit our goal of votes from 100,000 people. My message now to people who want to see a Christian world-view in City Hall, is: ‘Get on board!’ The train of Christian witness in political life is about to take a radical turn in its journey. It’s time to be part of this wonderful story of grassroots activism and service. ”

“Wherever I have gone across London in recent months, the public have been amazed that the PR system permits other voices to be heard in London government”, says Alan, “and not just the tired old secular parties.”

Boris Johnson has said Londoners have “the opportunity to bring about a change for the better” by voting for him on Thursday.

This week Johnson’s campaign have distributed a million ‘pledge cards’ and half a million leaflets to Liberal Democrat voters as it seeks to hoover up every possible vote.

They have also distributed over two million leaflets, individually tailored to each GLA constituency with over 20 specific pledges, to households.

Speaking as campaigning ended Mr Johnson said “work tirelessly to deliver safer streets, value for money, better transport links, and pleasant public spaces for all Londoners – and I want to ensure that everyone who lives here, whether they are from zone 1 or zone 6, enjoys our city’s success.”

On the final day of campaigning Ken Livingstone will urge Londoners ‘Don’t Vote For a Joke – Vote For London’ as a million postcards are delivered to households across London.

Livingstone’s campaign have also taken out newspaper advertisements and will target passengers at dozens of Tube stations.

Labour are certain that the gaffe made by Johnson’s campaign team in forwarding an ‘endorsement’ by TravelWatch Chair Brian Cooke which criticised Johnson’s policy to scrap the bendy bus and called extending the Freedom Pass a “mad idea” is the opportunity they’ve been waiting for to show that a Johnson Mayoralty is a big risk for London’s transport users.

Speaking this morning Mr Livingstone said a “series of attacks” on the Freedom Pass by Mr Johnson’s “demonstrate what would be in store if Boris Johnson became Mayor.”

“My commitment to extend the Freedom Pass so that older and disabled Londoners can use it before 9am was my first manifesto commitment of the campaign and I will ensure it is delivered this year.”

Today’s final push comes after Livingstone has been campaigning across London this week.

A spokesperson for his campaign said “Over the last six weeks it has become clear that the sharpest choice in this election is about Ken Livingstone’s commitment to London as opposed to Boris Johnson’s incompetence, a choice that will affect every Londoner’s pocket. The election is not a joke, it will affect the day to day life of every Londoner.”

Green Party Mayoral Candidate Sian Berry has been visiting London communities to explain the voting system for the London Assembly.

Green Party Mayoral Candidate Sian Berry has been visiting London communities to explain the voting system for the London Assembly.

Assembly List candidates are elected by voting on the peach-coloured London Assembly list ballot paper and to highlight how to vote Ms berry has been joined on the campaign trail by a 5-foot peach, bearing the message “Vote GREEN on the PEACH paper”.

Ms berry has also stressed the importance of casting a first vote for her in the Mayoral race in order to shut out the BNP, and has asked voters to insure against a Boris Johnson mayoralty by putting Ken Livingstone second.

Ahead of campaigning in South London today she said “I’m realistic about my chances of becoming Mayor. But voting for me in the first round will stop the BNP claiming fourth place - which they would take as proof that London is a racist city. You can then use your second vote to choose between Livingstone and Johnson. If, like me, you want to stop Boris Johnson, give your second to Ken.”

“But it’s on the Assembly vote that I’m likely to win. We have a great chance of doubling our numbers, electing me the fourth Green AM. Our AMs have already used their power over the Mayor’s budget to fight poverty wages and triple spending on cycling, among many other advances. With four, we’ll be able to slash bills and emissions by giving every Londoner free insulation, paid for from energy firms’ profits.”

“So please, vote Siân 1, Ken 2 and Green on the peach ballot paper to elect me to the Assembly.”

Labour are seeking to exploit a gaffe by Boris Johnson's campaign team which led to them releasing a statement of endorsement criticising Johnson's own plans to replace bendy buses and describing extending the Freedom Pass as a 'mad idea'.

Labour MPs and officials are seeking to exploit a gaffe by Boris Johnson’s campaign team which led to them releasing a statement of endorsement criticising Johnson’s own plans to replace bendy buses and describing extending the Freedom Pass as a “mad idea”.

Yesterday Mr johnson’s campaign circulated a personal statement (PDF) by London TravelWatch Chairman Brian Coke which contained a series of detailed criticisms of Livingstone’s approach to transport policy.

Less widely spotted was that the statement also undermined Mr Johnson’s protests that Labour were misleading voters by saying he posed a threat to the Freedom Pass.

Earlier this week Mr Johnson accused Labour of playing “dirty tricks” which “play on the most vulnerable in our society” promising to “support the London Boroughs who give free travel to the over 60’s. I will work with them to extend it to operate 24 hours a day.”

However that policy - shared by Mr Livingstone - was dismissed by Mr Cooke as a “mad idea” which would “make transport system even more crowded and more uncomfortable for those that will be paying to subsidise the others.”

Labour MP Karen Buck said “Boris Johnson’s total incompetence has again been exposed in a major self-inflicted gaffe.”

The gaffe came on the same day that Mr Livingstone launched a poster designed to portray Johnson as too inexperienced to manage London’s transport system.

This is not the first time Cooke’s backing for Johnson has caused problems. In February Mr Cooke withdrew from appearing at the launch of Johnson’s transport manifesto after TravelWatch were questioned about his appearance at a party political event.

Boris Johnson has confirmed that Labour MP Kate Hoey would join his administration as a non-executive Director advising on sport and the Olympics should he become Mayor later this week.

Boris Johnson has confirmed that Labour MP Kate Hoey would join his administration as a non-executive Director advising on sport and the Olympics should he become Mayor later this week.

Ina statement issued this morning Mr Johnson said

Commenting on the announcement, Boris Johnson said ms Hoey and he ” I agree that there is much more that can be done to promote sport and to develop sporting facilities across London.”

“I have already pledged to ring-fence London Development Agency money for sport, and if I am lucky enough to win she will be working on an agenda that includes protecting playing fields, boosting sports clubs and making sure that London’s kids all benefit from the Olympics.”

“Kate has a huge and well-known commitment to sport and to London, and I am determined to bring talent from across politics and the community to a new administration.”

Update: In a statement kate Hoey has said “The key part of the Boris Johnson statement - ie that I will be the first member of his administration - is wrong.”

Instead Ms hoey says she has “simply agreed to act in a similar position, for example to Conservative MPs John Bercow and Patrick Mercer - in that I have said that I will advise on a non-partisan basis in respect of my lifetime commitment to bringing sport to the people of London.”

“This is not an endorsement of Boris Johnson for mayor. I will be voting for my party and Labour candidates on Thursday.”

Ken Livingstone was joined senior female Labour politicians including Labour's Deputy leader Harriet Harman and Deputy Mayor of London Nicky Gavron for the launch of 'London: a city for women' - Labour's manifesto for women in the capital.

Ken Livingstone was joined senior female Labour politicians including Labour’s Deputy leader Harriet Harman and Deputy Mayor of London Nicky Gavron for the launch of ‘London: a city for women‘ - Labour’s manifesto for women in the capital.

The manifesto includes a call for stronger equality laws and a vow to “keep delivering new subsidized childcare places.”

Other policies include “making buses, trains, stations and bus-stops safer for women, with better lighting, more staff and more police” and “requiring businesses that contract with the GLA to show that they are employing and paying women equally”.

Mr Livingstone said his eight year term had seen him use “the full extent of my powers to deliver changes that women say their lives need: making transport fit women’s lives, delivering better, affordable childcare, tackling pay inequality, policies that have seen a fall in the number of women killed by domestic violence. Much more needs to be done but it would be thrown into reverse by Boris Johnson who has no record of supporting women’s equality.”

Nicky Gavron said Livingstone’s policies “address the issues women and women’s organizations have said they need” and accused Tory candidate Boris Johnson of making “public statements which are more at home in a lad’s mag than at City Hall.”
