City of London consults on St Paul’s improvements

Consultation opens next week on plans to dramatically improve the area around London’s iconic St Paul’s Cathedral in time for the 2012 Olympics.

Proposals for the site include relocating the existing St Paul’s coach park and landscape the space to provide a high quality green space, adding green space around the south transept and increasing the accessibility of the area.

The consultation period opens on 2nd February and runs until 2nd March and the City of London Corporation will be hosting an exhibition displaying details and visuals of the proposals in Carter Lane Gardens, south of St Paul’s.

Christine Cohen, Chairman of Streets and Walkways Committee, City of London Corporation said: “St Paul’s is one of London’s iconic buildings but currently its immediate environment does not reflect its world class importance. Five million people cross the Millennium Bridge each year and we have an obligation to ensure they have the best possible view of the Cathedral on their approach.”

When this work is complete will anyone be allowed to take a picture of it? – or will the “prevention of Terrorism” put a stop to that.

Getting rid of that coach park and making the area into a green space can’t come fast enough. Why it was kept there that long is beyond me.
Plus there are few green spaces in the city, so another one would be welcome.
