Londoners will have the opportunity to take part in a competition to find the UK’s best salsa dancers when Carnaval del Pueblo, Europe’s largest free Latin American fiesta, takes place on Sunday 5 August at Burgess Park.
Colombian Style Salsa World Champions Ricardo Murillo and Viviana Vargas will be hosting the competition throughout the day and the winning couple will dance with them live on stage in front of 100,000 people.
According to Ricardo Murillo salsa is a popular past time across the country: “thousands of people dance salsa in clubs and halls across the UK every night” and says he’s “sure we will find a hot couple ready to take the world by storm. Carnaval del Pueblo could launch them into a glittering career. Viviana and I are very excited at the prospect of finding two partners who can put the UK on the global salsa map.”
Carnaval del Pueblo is the UK’s biggest and best-loved Latin event, celebrating music, dance and culture from 19 Latin American countries. Now in its ninth successful year, it attracts and welcomes people from communities across the country.
The event kicks of at midday with a lively and colourful procession from London’s City Hall near Tower Bridge to Southwark’s Burgess Park, three miles away.
At the park, live acts on four stages will entertain tens of thousands of carnival-goers from 2pm to 9.30pm. They include Brazilian Samba shows, Latin Hip Hop, UK-based Reggaeton, Colombian Salsa, Mexican Mariachi, Bolivian folklore, Peruvian panpipes, and much more.
