Mayor of London Ken Livingstone yesterday announced he would establish "a high-level London wide group" to ensure the capital  meets the Government’s target to reduce childhood obesity.

The group will co-ordinate action on sport, physical fitness, health and obesity across the capital and include partners from NHS London, Sport England, Youth Sport Trust, Transport for London, London 2012, London Food Board, and Government departments.

Mayor Ken Livingstone said there was a need for "coordinated action between health, education, sport, transport services, urban planners and others. Working with Government, this new group will do just that."

The Mayor's announcement was welcomed by Alan Johnson, Secretary of State for Health and Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, School and Familie.

Mr Balls said the capital "has a great opportunity to transform the lives of its children and young people."
