Well worth it - 5 Stars June 25, 2008 Ian Hardy (UK) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Cakewalk did a fantastic job with Music Creator - as simple as that. It comes with video tutorials to get to know the software, which is great. MIDI setup was no problem at all - it just works as it should. Registration was my biggest concern when the well known dialog box appeared (not logged in as administrator) but worked out OK this time...phew...
Overall it's very stable so far but with like any audio software, make sure your VST/s and VSTi/s work - meaning if they don't work Music Creator might crash (I had this problem with 1 VST and removed it).
You can customize the interface and also give it a different visual appearance by changing colors...change them to any color you like...worth doing that, give it a try.
The software is well organized equals excellent work-flow. Features are included that are hard to find in other digital audio workstations in this price category, like the ability to create and print sheet music sets - how cool is that. Also nice is the fact it comes with a host of already installed VST/s which get you going if you need a reverb-effect or such. Full interactive realtime curves for volume control and panning control etc. are also a great feature of Music Creator. The Console window (which is not a DOS-Box by the way) is well structured and each channel can be easily identified by meaningful icons.
MIDI track: Set the track's output, channel, bank, and patch; set the input source and monitor input levels; mute, solo, and arm the track; set channel volume, panning, chorus, and reverb levels.
Audio track: Set the track's output; set the input source and monitor input levels; mute, solo, and arm the track; set track volume and panning; apply real-time effects, send audio data to buses.
Bus: Receive input from one or more audio tracks, apply real-time effects, and send the results to an output or other bus. Main out

Nasty sting if you want to record as MP3 April 10, 2008 D. Wallace 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Music creator requires an extra $20 licence if you want to export as MP3. Given the price of the product this is a nasty sting in the tail. What a nuisance to have to use iTunes to convert the files afterwards!
The online help is described in terms like "next to the grid button" but with no pictures anywhere of the "grid button" so you end up hovering over hundreds of little buttons waiting for tooltips to appear to discover which one is the "grid button". Not easy to use for a newbie.
Also the index in the paper manual has no page numbers. At least you know the topic is there before flicking through to find it!
I also had problems fiddling with very technical settings for days to get it to do any recording of sound or midi on a standard Dell laptop.
It works, but given the reputation, I was expecting a better user experience.
