3 out of 5 stars BC Story. In the beginning...   July 17, 2008
D Deacon (Liverpool, England)
This is country with a bit of rock (U2 comes to mind on The Story) and a twist of blues. Quite commercial in covering as many corners as possible. Not bad though - just not original. Don't like the breaking voice on some tracks; I find it grates. Turps is okay. Okay, as I am listening as I am writing, I am liking this more Turps thing more. Quite poppy. Beware of easily liked things since they don't last too long... 'My Song' now back to U2 mode, Snow Patrol etc... I like it. Okay I'll give it **** She has quite a line in catchy chord sequences. Nice production too - clean and effortless. Not bad atall. Buy it, it's a bit of everything. She's got a good voice too. Hang on. 'Wasted' reminds me of the delicious Katie Melua. This bottle of cabernet sauvignon is going down rather well. Don't like the lead in Wasted. 'Have You Ever' the truth is out - country and some folk. Not so good. 'Josephine' not tonight. 'Losing Heart' is better - menacing feel. 'Cannonball' dropped. Ouch! "I was born when I met you" How else? Duh!! 'Until I die' dies. U2 mode again but no it changes. 'Downpour' (tears?)country folk heart-strings stuff with violin low notes. 'Shadows on the Wall' Okay. 'Again Today' and again U2 mode. Not bad but demoted to ***.

4 out of 5 stars A Measure of Vintage Brandi   June 28, 2008

What are you thinking? "Oh no, not another female singer-songwriter!" I know, I know, they're everywhere aren't they? There were five on my bus this morning. But if some of them (including some of the higher profile ones) are pretty formulaic, or plain rubbish, Brandi Carlisle is well up the quality scale. To me this could be an album made by Beth Orton after a boozy session with Bonnie Raitt backstage at a Paul McCartney gig. So you get folky pop-rock with an abrasive element. It's pretty accessible, no bad thing, and not forgettable. Brandi Carlisle here shows good old-fashioned songwriting and performing skills. No gimmicks, plenty of talent.

4 out of 5 stars The second coming   June 26, 2008

Having got this when it first hit US stores, I have to say that I was more than a little underwhelmed by it.

Time, though, has made a big difference.

Second time around, the richness and sheer quality of the album as a whole has shone through for me. Recorded as "live", with T Bone Burnett at the production helm, if you are the kind of person who likes KT Tunstall, then you will find much to adore on this collection.

4 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Good   June 26, 2008

I wasn't sure of this one at the time of ordering, but it actually was good. It's a great 'easy listen', perfect for most occasions. I listen to this one mostly in the car.

If you like a bit of 'calm' in your music... I can recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you want from an album... here.   June 24, 2008
David Calcano (London, UK)
Nothing beats the process of falling in love with a newly discovered new artist... and this album was exactly that feeling.

I can just say wow... songs like 'Late Morning Lullaby' I love it!! very few things can beat the blend of acoustic guitars with a powerful chorus melody along with some great background vocals.
How would I classify Brandi, like many great artists she uses elements from many different places, including rock, country & folk.
'The Story' just blew my mind... I'm struggling expressing the power of Brandi's voice here is just unbelievable, a mixture of melancholy & pain that REALLY love in a singer... she suffers the pain of the lyrics and the melody is just perfect.

Maybe is just cliche, but her songs are very cinematic... I just can't stop to imagine scenes and events happening with Brandi's songs on the background! I'm just a prostitute of melody, I give everything away after a song that has sadness and feeling through the vocal line...

Let the music play!!!
