A+++ December 21, 2007 Paul Chalkly (Luton, Beds, England) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I heard "blue eyes" on the Garden State soundtrack and bought this album off the back of it. Cary Brothers are a little like Coldplay and Snow Patrol but in my mind a little better. This is a very chilled out album and flows nicely.
Oh and for those lovers of "blue eyes", it is a hidden track at the end of the album.
About time! June 22, 2007 Mr. A. A. J. Forman (England) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
First off - I'm biased - that's my disclaimer, I was looking forward to this album and intended to enjoy it - so I'll get that out now!
When you do get the thing in you hand though, I think you'll agree it looks pretty darn good. The artwork, images and visuals are all pretty classy and eye catching and the cardboard design just gives it that little edge when placed among the rest of your CD collection.
To the songs though!
The sound on this album has a very `Brit Pop' feel to it. You can hear dashes of U2 here, a bit of Coldplay there and some RadioHead around it all. Its got the Cary Brothers feel to it, the chords sound familiar and the ambiance is there - and you can definitely here the pain and feeling in some of the songs (honestly, jealousy, glass parade, think awhile). Interestingly the album seems to have a much more poignant feel to it rather than rocking off the shelves with `sing alongs' (such as the previous EP's `Waiting for your Letter'). There are times when listening that maybe one more rocky track could have finished it off - but I'm being picky.
The album mellowy begins with `Jealousy' a beautiful opener with great Lyrics and interesting dynamics. `Ride' follows next, with some added drums and an extended outro improving it greatly. As the album progresses stand out tracks like `Glass Parade' and the beautiful `Honestly' - which is my opinion is the best track on the album - cruise on by.
The more upbeat songs like `Who You Are' and `The Last One' are well executed and nicely produced, but maybe just lacking a bit of bite. `If you were here' and `Think Awhile' provide a nice buffer to make up for the sombre `loneliest Girl in the world'. Brothers was right when he described early versions of `All the Rage' as a mood rather than a song - either way, its inclusion here is a nice change of pace and it is beautifully executed, really ranking as one of those songs you put on in the car as you drive home late a night after a busy day. The album rounds off with `Precious Lie', another delicately arranged song with a soaring chorus - this I imagine will be a good song to hear live, lots of raw emotion.
Overall then - I like this album, it flows, its got nice musical diversity - Cary's voice is at its best, the tracks are great, and you can really hear Chad Fischer's influence throughout the whole record. My only criticism is that for some fans, the lack of real rocky tunes maybe disappointing - for some!
If you liked `All the Rage' and `Waiting for your Letter' or the music of `Garden State' and the variety of `mood' music from Scrubs - you're going to like this Album.
