5 out of 5 stars Very good tool - light, powerful & simple   August 2, 2008

I bought this about a month ago when we bought our first house, complete with a medium size lawn.

When it came, there was a bit of assembly to do, to put the grass box together. If you've got a bit of common sense and follow the instructions then this is easy.

When cutting the lawn, it made a very nice finish and munched through thicker grass perfectly happily. I found the mower light enough to control with one hand, pushing it around like a vacuum cleaner, leaving the other arm free to keep the cable out of the way. The cable is about as long as you want it - much more and it'd start being a pain. It easily stores away inside the grassbox when not in use.

The handle for adjusting the height can be a bit stiff if you're trying to make the cut longer (i.e. trying to move the body of the lawnmower upwards). Easy way around this is to lift up slightly (there's a big grab handle on top of the mower body) and then the wheels will happily drop down when you move the lever (it's not exactly rocket science).

Some bits of the mower are a bit plasticky, particularly the grass box, but it seems to be a fairly flexible, high-impact type plastic so no concerns bout it lasting. The whole thing seems pretty well put together, so I've no concerns abut it lasting the course.

All in, I'm very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars A good buy   August 1, 2008

Having read the advice on mowers and considering the cylinder to be the best, but couldn't find one in my budget for the size of my lawn, which is medium sized. However after reading the reviews of the Bosch Rotak 40 on this and other sites, I decided to buy a rotary and used it for the first time today. I assembled it within 15 mins, and had no problem with the grass-box.

I cut the front and back lawns set on the lowest cut, my new purchase cut through with no problem at all. And with the length of the cable I now don't need to use my extension cable. My only criticism; I would prefer the handle to be higher.

But all round the Bosch Rotak 40 is a very good buy. So thanx to all the previous reviewers for their comments.

I have used this lawn mower since last year, It has been as described by all.But the motor has just broken, On inspection the cover over the motor has vents in it but these were blocked with grass hence the motor over heated and sized up. So if you have one take of the top cover by undoing the two screws, so you can clean of the cover over the motor, or it will happen to yours.

5 out of 5 stars Bosch Rotak 40 better than expected.   July 27, 2008

Took delivery of the Rotak earlier in the week and finally got around to assembling it yesterday.

The grass box was nothing as bad as some reviewers had indicated. Very easy to push together the two bottom halves and with a little care it was equally easy to get the latches lined up with the lid.

Getting the bottom of the handle lined up with the shroud was a bit of a fiddle as it had to be lined up absolutely even. Also a little bit of experimentation was needed to get the handle pushed down into the sockets so that the screws could be inserted. However all in all probably at most 15 mins.

Really do recommend buying the cable winder kit. Clips onto the LH handle near the top. The top clip swivels to make the cable easy to remove.

The Bosch is very light and easy to move and I feared for it's efficiency, but it was easy to push up and down the lawn and gave a good even cut. Another good point is that there are two lifting handles built into the shroud, so very easy to lift and move around.

All in all a very good product!

What a bit of kit.

I spent ages online looking for the best deal, even went to Which to look at their reviews too. This machine came 4th in their tests, and I am wondering what the other three did that this didn't.

We had been borrowing an old Bosch from my father-in-law, having just moved to a rented place with our first garden. I didn't want to spend too much on a lawnmower, but wanted something that would mean I had more time to sit out on the lawn rather than the hour and a half it took to cut it all and gather the cut grass that "missed" the grass box.

With all the reviews, tests and then a recommendation from a work colleague, I went for the Rotak 40.

Out of the box it was pretty light, and requires the grass box to be put together as stated in a few other reviews (three pieces, clicked together in a few minutes) Maybe mine is a new design, but this was pretty simple to complete. A few clips here, and insertion of a few screws there, and the machine was ready to go in about 15 minutes.

Off we went to the garden, and it was pretty easy to move around being so light and having some well placed handles. Switched on, and filled the grass box in about ten minutes. I was pretty surprised at this, but looking behind me I realised that not a blade of grass had been left on the lawn. It took me about 30 minutes in total, to do what had usually been a 90 minute chore.

Any complaints? Well I am not sure about the lovely red combs on the side. Maybe I expected more than they could give, but I still have to tidy the grass along the sides of my fence so maybe this is more gimicky than a practical aid. It did take more from the side than I usually got though so it must have done something.

The grass box filled pretty quickly like I said (a good thing as it shows it is pretty efficient) but there was no real way to see that the box was full.

The only other thing is that there is no cable tidy on the handles. It didn't cost much to get one, but this is supposed to be at the higher end of the Rotak series - don't be so cheap Bosch!

On all of these points though I don't think they merit taking a star from the review as everything else was excellent and none of my complaints impacted on the abilities of this machine to do what it should - Cut grass.
