SENNHEISER - CX 400 headphones review August 27, 2008 Simon Down (UK) I bought a pair of CX400 to replace my last sennheiser headphones that were perfect until the cable failed - the same problem with the last 2 sets so i tried something new.
The sound quality is good but very fiddly to achieve. You need to make sure the seal on the earbuds is perfect otherwise your get tinny and poor quality sound.
If you get the seal right then it is impressive, good base and quality for all the music i like - classical, trance, folk, rock, you name it.
The biggest downside though - and the reason i will stop using these when i can replace them - is the cable noise.
I use my iPod every day at work sat at a desk and every movement i make seems to generate a noise as the cable move. The cable rubbing against my stubble sounds like someone sanding down timber and the noise when it rubs against my shirt collar is even worse.
It must be something to do with the design of the canal buds style rather than old fashioned in the ear headphones, or maybe the cable covering but the noise generated - unless your head remains perfectly still while you listen - ruins the music.
I paid 40 for the headphones and then will shortly be in a cupboard gathering dust and I am going to buy some simple in the ear style ones.
The sound is very good - but why the split cable? August 15, 2008 D. Morris (Brighton, UK) After suffering with inferior quality earphones for a few months after my cx300s died I had to go for sennheiser again for the great sound quality - and these looked ideal because they provide the all important shirt-clip. My main use is whilst running and I want good sound with lightweight earphones that are secure and cannot bounce out of my ears.
The new lead design is horrible. A far-too short lead with an extra meter of lead that attaches by a weighty connection. Basically, because of the extra weight if you want to run they bang around uncomfortably knocking all over the place. Also the leads fly up and whack you in the face making these some of the most annoying earphones I've had.
After elaborate experimentation I've made them more or less secure involving tucking the connector-weight inside my shirt and using an extra clip from old earphones to fasten the round the back - they would have been absolutely perfect with just 1 longer lead and a decent fastening clip.
Great phones August 12, 2008 N. Bell I was quite sceptical about in ear bud type 'phones, but these CX400 'phones are great. A bit strange when you first wear them, but they fit really well and block almost all outside noise out without needing the volume high at all.
Stick with the CX 300 instead July 29, 2008 M. Byrne (London) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Just purchased these headphones and I must say I am very disappointed. Having previously owned the CX 300, the cable split so I decided to try these.
The CX 400 cable has been shortened to the extent that it is unusable with anything that will sit in your pocket without using the supplied extension lead. The sound was also disappointing compared to the CX 300. I've just tried both pairs and the CX 300 had a much nicer bass, cable was perfect length and the "behind the head" cable design was more comfortable.
I love Sennheiser headphones and have owned several pairs over the years, from outer ear to these and I've even owned some Shure EC3 headphones. My favourite for comfort, value and usability is the CX 300 so stick to these and you won't be disappointed. All the positive things you hear in other reviews about the quality of these is true, but better in the 300 (and cheaper). I'm going to tape up my old ones and use those instead.
Great phones! July 23, 2008 Siboz (United Kingdom) I bought these earphones to replace some sony over ears i used to have as they had broken. I wasn't too sure about getting in ear earphones as i usually prefere over ear headphones however with these i wasn't dissapointed. The sound is far better than any earphones i've ever tried and the base is amazing. Again, i've had the same few problems with them as others- namely you can hear movement if the line of the phones is touched, however it needs quite a bang to be noticeable. This is the only problem really, most of the time i will stay in the same place when using them anyway, so theyre fine, however even when walking they're still great, its just if the line gets banged. So overall great phones- they are extremely comfortable and can be worn for long periods of time, unlike many others. The 3 sizes it comes with is a really clever idea, i was happy with the ones already on. Again the sound is great, and i don't receieve base problems, which many do. Additionally, i bought these off amazon market for just 14, which is a bargain compared to some of the prices i have seen (and they're definately not fakes!). So overall, buy them!!
