Minor gripes but decent sound. August 17, 2008 Adam Morrison (United Kingdom) Personally I find the sound quality of the CX500s very good and they are comfortable headphones with a useful range of accessories. The noise isolation is reasonable for the price, though one byproduct of this is very noticeable "cable rub" noise.
This may seem an unusual complaint (though I've seen it mentioned in a number of other reviews) but the packaging really is appalling. You have to work hard not to slice yourself and the headphones to pieces whilst hacking your way in. I am guessing it is designed this way to make them difficult to return to shops once opened, but it is both a waste of plastic and a real annoyance.
Not good August 4, 2008 Mr. J. Alderdice (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Got the CX500 headphones at 9am monday morning, 9:02 they where being packaged up for return. they are rubbish, listening through my ipod. i thought i was in a tunnel, with the amount of echo there seemed to be coming through. maybe i got dud ones, but i think i will stick with original apple headphones-better by miles.
UTTERLY DISAPPOINTING August 3, 2008 L. Hansen (London, UK) Shockingly BAD and distorted sound - that is the essence of these earphones.
I am surprised that anyone has praised these. They are very comfortable to wear, UNTIL YOU START PLAYING YOUR MUSIC!!
I tried using them with my laptop, my iPod and a stereo and nothing could possibly make the Sennheiser CX 500 earphones sound good!
Whatever your budget might be, I suggest that you spend the extra and buy a proper pair - anything and at any price-range from Shure will do (from about 40) or stick to whatever you have.
There is only one thing worse than no sound and that is BAD sound!!
Good luck with your purchase - it is a bit of a jungle to find good earphones, but obviously price is (unfortunately) a good indication of the quality...
Awful July 25, 2008 S. J. Turner 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I own a pair of CX300s and love them deeply - there is a clarity and depth to the sound they produce that just destroys the appalling tat that Apple insists on saddling us with on purchasing an iPod. Over the course of the last few months, something has been steadily deteriorating on the 300s - specifically the right-hand channel. Quiter, duller, less definition etc. Not sure what the issue is, but they're not the sort of phones you can pull apart and see where the problem lies. So.
Decided to renew with a pair of 500s and I'm at a loss to describe how disappointed I am with these headphones. I read the reviews, the vast majority of them absolutely glowing (and who am I to doubt), but a disquieting amount very negative, and I'm not just talking about the cord length here. Nevertheless I went ahead and bought a pair, figuring they had to be a step up from the 300s - ergo even better, right?
Not so. The sound is flat and tinny, there is absolutely no bass and, frankly, I cannot listen to any music with these things on. A podcast maybe, but listening to music is frankly painful. Nasty. Way, way worse than the standard Apple fare. Like listening to a very cheap transistor radio at the opposite end of the room, that's how bad.
Given the contrast in my opinions to that of so many others reviewing here, I'm starting to wonder if I've got a pair of fakes on my hands.
Cable noise! July 24, 2008 Kaz Was looking for a good pair of in-ear headphones for a reasonable price. The good: Sound quality is good though a lot more hushed than my cheaper headphones.
The bad: Cable noise, cable noise and more cable noise.. these headphones pick up every tiny bit of cable noise from simple banging the cable up against a desk for instance or worse yet against your own jumper whilst running (providing every track with the CX500's own drum and base concert), which to me was the final straw and why I decided to go back to my old creative (much cheaper) headphones for running..
nb. the cable isnt designed for behind the head use..
